Amy will discuss how the quality of sleep can have a huge effect on everything from our physical and mental wellbeing to our performance during the day. The culprit behind insomnia for some could actually be down to the way the bedroom is designed.

Where is the craziest place you've slept?

I have slept on multiple forms of transport but one of my most liberating sleeps was during a holiday with a friend. We went to Cuba, booking through a travel agent, but arrived at a boring beach hotel complex with terrible food. After two days of what felt like a holiday prison we hired a mini 4x4 and embarked on a road trip to Havana. Arriving into the city was a sight I will never forget; the grand colourful buildings crumbling away were jaw-droppingly beautiful. We had no plan but saw an impressive building in the centre overlooking the sea - the Hotel Nacional de Cuba. Waved in by the doorman, we pulled up outside and wandered into the lobby to ask for a hotel room on the spot. The décor was old fashioned and overwhelmingly brown, much of the grandeur faded, but it had such a presence with a quietly seedy undertone. An unforgettable experience.

What bedroom trends never seem to change?

For me the main one has to be a crisp white bedlinen set. It never goes out of fashion and never should. Nothing beats the feeling of climbing into fresh white sheets. White sheets also work well with so many different décor schemes.

Design wise, what makes a bedroom more inviting?

An armchair placed strategically in line with the doorway definitely draws you into a bedroom. It is also a great way to pick up with colour scheme and gain a cosy reading spot. Personally, I love the glamour of a vanity table with mirror and seat. There is such a decadence to a vanity in the corner of a bedroom complete with a perfume or jewellery on display - an echo of the Hollywood era. It also has a great purpose too for hair styling. I love the design of vintage vanities and their contemporary counterparts, something Pinch have done very well.

Which hotel, B&B or luxury retreat would you most like to visit or revisit and why?

I have been lucky to travel extensively for work and play and stay in a vast array of hotels, from the extremely luxurious (baths with views of the Eiffel Tower) to functional airport chain hotels (business stops) and the odd horror! There are so many that I would love to revisit. For pure luxury and rest I would return to the Surin Phuket in Thailand designed by Edward Tuttle. The calming chalet rooms have a modern muted decor and are set over the sea surrounded by rich foliage. It offers pure escapism.

As a Londoner I haven’t often stayed at our own city’s finest hotels but I would love to wake up at one of the city’s destination hotels in the centre of town. I love to stay at hotels that have a totally different taste of decor to my own. Although I wouldn’t replicate the look at home, I love the granny chic style of the Soho House group and eclectic patterns of the Firmdale properties.

Where have you had the best night's sleep?

Nothing beats my own bed for a good night’s sleep but if pushed to look further afield I would recall a trip last summer in our months of freedom following lockdown. I stayed in West Dorset in a small pub with simple, tastefully decorated rooms near Chesil Beach. The room looked onto the sea and had an enormous super king sleigh bed from which you could listen to the sound of the waves. To be somewhere away from home felt so rejuvenating.

Tell us about your own bedroom?

My main intention for our current bedroom was to create a calming space, so there is lots of storage hidden behind simple doors with a mix of vintage furniture pieces. The walls are painted in a pale shade of blue grey, just off from white giving a gentle softness. After years of wooden floors, we chose a knotted-pile carpet for something warm and soft underfoot, comfort is key. For our windows I opted for a super simple white blackout blind to block streetlight paired with sheer white curtains which work really well in the day as they allow light in while maintaining a feeling of privacy as we live on a London street. They also bring a modern softness to the space. The furniture is mostly vintage which I love as they hold their own memories. On the wall I have an abstract Danish print I bought years ago which I love. The room is still evolving and will change over time.

What gets you up in the morning?

My daughter. As a baby she was a great sleeper but now she is three she often wakes up early and scrambles into our bed which she loves to jump on. We recently added a kitten to the mix who also likes to play at dawn, so there’s no chance of a lazy lie-in!

What helps you to sleep at night?

Fresh sheets, a good pair of pyjamas and a tidy room help me feel settled and ready for bed. I also have blackout blinds which I couldn’t live without as they block out the streetlight.

How do you help overnight guests feel welcome in your home?

When guests stay I love to leave a guest set at the end of the bed. These often include miniature bathroom essentials I’ve picked up along the way on hotel travels plus a fresh towel and eye mask. In the past when having guests to stay while we were away I even made pretend hotel brochures listing local recommendations and invented hotel amenities as a light-hearted welcome.

What luxury item would you take on a desert island?

A big question! I am assuming the island offers all the necessary bits for living so my luxury would be a drawing set - a box of Prismacolor coloured pencils and paper so that I could draw my surroundings and keep my mind occupied. I love to sketch though often don’t have the time to do it so with all the quiet endless days on a desert island I could while away the days drawing.

How would you best describe your interior style?

Definitely modern. I love to combine vintage and new pieces collected over time. At home I have a 1970s pink perspex dining table designed by British designer Peter Banks with a set of candy coloured Fritz Hansen Series 7 chairs. Vintage pieces but modern in design. I like homes that feel organic rather than designed and bought all under one scheme. Many of my pieces I feel have their own stories of how I came to acquire them or previous lives which I love. In our age of consciousness around sustainability it makes sense to work with vintage.

How did you get into Interior Design and what do you love about it?

As a child my parents dragged me around London’s modern furniture destination, The Conran Shop, and I always laugh that as an adult I can often be found trawling London’s furniture and interiors stores in just the same way. In my twenties I found myself at Wallpaper* magazine which gave me an amazing design education and gold ticket access to the international design scene. Working in the industry I love championing independent designers and sourcing fresh talent. For me quality and craftsmanship is key. Recently I have been curating design pieces for a new digital platform, Lymited, for which I have been able to promote a group of extremely talented designer-makers.

Which room in your house is your favourite?

My favourite room in the house is our daughter’s room. I designed a light but bold monochrome scheme with pastel off-pink walls and matching pink carpet. The back of the door is in a
bubblegum pink as a hidden detail. She has a beautiful Danish toddler bed and a 1930s vintage wardrobe. Aside from the mass of toys and books it is a very peaceful and happy room which I love to sit in and read.

What do you think will be the next big bedroom trend?

In every part of our lives now sustainability has come to the forefront of our priorities. This, along with wellness and the need to look after our mental health, very much ties into how we are seeing the bedroom as a personal retreat. These themes are coming through in bedroom furniture with the use of more natural materials at every level, such as rush in wardrobe panels. We are also seeing cocooning beds and extended headboards wide enough to include bedside tables and lamps, enveloping sleeping guests.

What tip would you give someone who wants to transform their bedroom space?

I would focus on what view you have from your bed and start there. Art can be a great source of inspiration, and having a piece of art that you love or a view through a window, can bring tranquillity and energy. Simple changes like looking at the position of the bed in your space and keeping clutter at bay all help to create a restful room.

Amy is the former Interiors Director at Wallpaper* magazine and an unrivalled source of inspiration on how to sleep in style at home. Since cutting his teeth in the linen trade over 50 years ago, Robert has become the go-to expert in pairing luxury hotels with the bedding, bed and bath linen and tableware guests love. Here Robert shares his bedroom secrets and tells us why he’s known as the man that’s made a million beds.

How did you become known as the man that’s made a million beds?

Being in the business for over 50 years means I’ve helped dress a lot of beds! My colleagues came up with a million after averaging out the number of clients I’d served over the years. Of course, the quality of that bedding has continuously improved over time. The very first hotel I sold to was a luxury 70s five-star hotel in the Midlands. At the time we sold the highest specification 120 thread count linen… How things have moved on!

What do you remember about your early days in the industry?

The first company I worked for was a family-run textile wholesaler that had been around for about a hundred years. As a management trainee I did every job in the company, from hand-sewing hessian bales, and packing to van driving, and working in accounts. It was very much a case of learning on the job. At the time there were no cardboard boxes, mobile phones, calculators, internet – none of that had been invented, yet we still managed to import and sell textiles around the world! Crucially, it was here as a trainee that I learned the importance of sticking to my values. My boss taught me to know my own mind and not to accept anything that wasn’t correct. I’d say it’s one of the reasons we have the reputation we have today. People know we try very hard to get everything right.

Where is the craziest place you’ve slept?

One of the most unusual places I’ve slept is the floor of a Cross Channel ferry following a ski trip. I was woozy on travel sickness pills and fell asleep on the metal floor on top of a pile of skis. I woke up aching and with ski marks running across my face.

What hotel, B&B or luxury retreat would you most like to revisit and why?

I’ve stayed in a lot of fabulous 5-star hotels, but the ones that always stick in my memory are the properties owned by Firmdale Hotels – I've slept in most of the London ones and Crosby Street in New York. Every Firmdale has its own character that oozes style and ambience with bundles of charm. The Pig Hotels are also a firm favourite, again because of the way they make you feel. When you’re sleeping in one of The Pigs, you’re cocooned in this wonderful nurturing environment that engenders a feeling of wellbeing. You leave feeling totally restored. Both Groups have wonderful staff and this really matters so much to the memory of your stay.

Where have you had the best night’s sleep?

It’d probably be Pine Cliffs in The Algarve, which I visited a few years ago. It’s situated on a very steep cliff with lush grounds, a private beach and breath-taking views of the coast. It reminds me that you don’t have to go to Barbados for a taste of paradise!

Tell us about your own bedroom?

Although I’m 6’ 2” and super king size beds offer more space, I prefer to sleep in a standard five-foot bed somewhere closer to my wife! A super king size bed puts three feet of bed between the two of you … My preference for bedding is a down/feather mix pillow and a down duvet, with soft and silky sheets in pure white, however, I am constantly ‘product testing’ the entire Tielle range for luxury, quality and comfort. I’ll even try a winter weight duvet in summer and vice-versa, just to be sure they’re delivering. I have a simple wooden headboard that suits me perfectly for a bit of bedtime reading, and I probably wash my bedlinen every one to two weeks.

What gets you up in the morning?

I’m a lark and wake up somewhere between 5-6am after 6-7 hours sleep. It doesn’t take much to get me moving but the pale yellow bedroom walls certainly help. I chose the shade because I’m a morning person and as dawn breaks, the colour of the walls just get warmer and warmer. The colour also goes beautifully with our white, duck egg and cool grey linen range.

What helps you sleep at night?

I can sleep anywhere – train, plane or car, so I’ve no problem at all napping or drifting off to sleep at home. I’ll always manage to catch a few pages of the book I’m reading though before I nod off. I’m currently reading John Sandford’s latest book, a writing style I love. Few authors write dialogue as well as him.

How do you help overnight guests feel welcome in your home?

Because I believe in the importance of a good night’s sleep, I always make sure my guests have a great bed to sleep in, and I’m always complemented on the linen! A long time ago, I stayed over at some friends who lived in a one-bedroom flat. They didn’t have a sofa bed so they made a bed out of a pile of books five wide and ten long, topped with a flimsy duvet. Needless to say, I slept terribly! Although thankfully no-one has offered me a bed of books since, I do find your guest’s sleep experience is often overlooked. But then I guess I’m slightly biased!

What luxury item would you take on a desert island?

Getting a good night's sleep would help me wake up refreshed and ready to take on the day’s challenges so I'd choose the whole bed cocoon – a comfy bed, fresh white cotton bedlinen, and a good quality down duvet and pillows, and if there was space I’d take a feather and down topper as well ! Supporting others to sleep well and live in sync with their own body clock brings meaning to my life. With that also comes calmness and felling centred, which gives my mind less to think or worry about, making it easier to sleep well at night.

Do you have any sleep rituals?

Well, preparing for sleep starts in the morning when you wake up. You have all day to prepare for sleep the next night, not just the two hours before you go to bed. Personally, I like starting my day with a meditation. I already mentioned that I go for a walk in the morning, I also go for another walk at lunch or cycle. During the day I make sure I move and take mini-breaks. I also stay hydrated and try and have dinner around 7pm to have a fasting window of 12 hours. I have Night Shift installed on my screen devices which comes on in the evening. Crucially though, I stop working after 8pm whenever possible. While there have been moments of pause during the day, in the evening I make sure not to overstimulate the brain. I chat with my husband, read, watch something specific on TV, or just listen to something random.

What luxury item would you take on a desert island?

An eye mask. Stick to these times weekday and weekend. This will provide you with the most efficient sleep during which your energy resources can fully recharge.

Spend time outdoors in natural daylight: This helps your body clock know it is daytime and later when it’s dark, it knows to promote sleep. It also boosts your mood.

Do something you enjoy: Make some 'me time' during the day or evening to do something that helps you to relax and switch off from work. Quality of time is more important than quantity in this instance.

Why is sleep so important?

Where to start and where to end?! In a nutshell, sleep helps your body and brain to restore itself so you can be the best you can be during the day. Think of it like a bank account. If you keep withdrawing money but not paying any in, you sooner or later get into the red and have to face negative consequences. Similarly with sleep, if you don’t get the sleep you need (a question of quality and duration), your physical health, cognitive performance, and emotional wellbeing will start to deteriorate. You get ill, both mentally and physically and that reduces the quality of your life. Not just yours but also that of your loved ones and the people around you at work and friends. Sleep is the social glue that ties humans together, it promotes social interaction. If you have had a poor night, you are less empathetic and instead more irritable and withdrawn with potentially negative consequences for human-to-human interaction.

How can you get a better night's sleep when the evenings are so much lighter?

Make your bedroom dark and quiet and use an eye mask if necessary. Spent time outdoors in the daytime so your body clock ‘sees’ light and knows that it is daytime. It can then better register the change in light levels in the evening, and while it might take a little longer until it is fully dark outside, the body clock will notice the change and start to prepare the body for sleep. To help with that, keep indoor lights low or even better off. That includes blue-light emitting devices.

How can you improve your sleep during the warmer summer nights?

During the day, keep the curtains and windows shut. Open them in the evening before bed to try and create a breeze. Some people find fans helpful.

Make sure you hydrate throughout the day and evening.

While a chilled glass of rosé in the evening is nice, alcohol can contribute to poor sleep at night. The same goes for spicy and heavy food.

Use thin sheets instead of duvets and wear thin bed clothes. In exceptional heat, some people shower in their pyjamas before going to bed, others put them in a plastic bag and pop them in the freezer to cool them down. Cooling the neck and/or back can also help to improve sleep.

Let go of the worrying because that can get you worked up and hinder sleep even more.

Sleeping during the heat can be tricky but it is not impossible. The world changed dramatically over the last 12 months and continues to change. Spend a moment with your worrisome thoughts and feelings during the day - is there anything helpful in them, anything you can address? If they are unhelpful, learn to disentangle from them. By stepping back and observing your thoughts you can also decide where to shift your attention next – onto the same unhelpful thoughts about the future or back to the present moment.

Try and stick to your personal sleep window as much as possible. While initially these will have created uncertainty and anxiety, lifestyle changes such as the absence of a daily commute and rise in remote working has led many to adopt new sleep-wake cycles that potentially work more intuitively with our natural body clock.

Our bodies are full of clocks that send signals at set times to keep our bodies working their best. For each of us there’s a perfect time to get up, eat or work. All these mini clocks are regulated by a master clock called the suprachiasmatic nuclei that keeps the body in tune with the 24-hour cycle of light and dark outside. Disrupting this clock will leave you feeling sluggish and sleepy to say the least.”

While we can all use alarm clocks and apps to dictate a sleep-wake cycle, Dr Kat says: “It’s best to follow a sleep schedule that fits your natural rhythm if you want the best night’s sleep. Understanding your chronotype – how your inner master clock syncs with the external world - can help you develop a routine that improves your sleep and subsequently, all aspects of your waking life.

As workplaces begin to open back up, many will be feeling anxious about having to adapt to new routines. If you’ve found a sleep pattern that works for you, now could be a good time to ask your employer for flexitime, rather than forcing your master clock to change. If you’re a ‘lark’ or morning person, you may be better starting your working day early. If you’re an ‘owl’ or evening person, you may prefer to start and end late. Having that flexibility could make a big difference to the quality of your work and life.”

Dr Kat also advises against jobs that don’t fit your chronotype. A ‘lark’ is never going to be cut out for night shifts! Likewise, an ‘owl’ won’t enjoy leaping out of bed at 5am.

If you do have to change into an earlier sleep-wake routine, Dr Kat recommends you start adjusting a few days in advance, as it can take time to reset your sleep. “While it’s light that tells your brain whether it’s night time or daytime, biologically it takes longer for that message to reach every cell. If you need to train your brain to wake earlier, ease yourself into the routine a few days beforehand by dimming the lights and slowing down earlier than normal before bedtime. Likewise, when you get up, pull open the curtains and let the light flood in as soon as you can.”

Dr Kat’s top tips for the best night’s sleep

Identify your personal sleep window: How much sleep do you need and when do you sleep best? Thread counts or ‘tc’ refer to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch. Generally, the higher the thread count, the softer the bed linen. However, yarn quality, fabric construction and finish all matter when it comes to how well your bed linen looks, feels and lasts.

The best thread count sheets and duvet covers vary between 200-600. Anything higher and the fabric can become less breathable and harder to wash.
