Even Dulux’s 2022 Colour of the Year is ‘Blue Skies’. However, while many blues evoke feelings of sky or water, paler shades with grey undertones create more restful spaces. A baby blue or blue with acid tones is likely to do the reverse. When decorating, the timeless combination of blue and white (think sky + clouds) never goes out of fashion. But if you want to add colour, forget the ‘blue and green should never been seen’ adage. Soft grey blues and sage greens especially can work beautifully together, as do blue walls teamed with pops of yellow gold and cream. Whatever colour you choose, toning the curtains in with the walls will help to bring a sense of flow and ease.

Add natural and earthy features

Creating a nature-inspired or biophilic environment is all about engaging the senses, whether that’s through natural textures that deliver a deep tactile experience or fragrant flowers or plants. A lovely way to build sensory impact is to link back to the colour and form of flowers and foliage in the garden, or by introducing soft furnishings in natural fibres and beautiful earthy tones. Eco-friendly grasscloth wallpaper with its organic feel and grassy scent is perfectly suited to nature-inspired interiors, and works particularly well with soft earthy accents, such as soft blues and greens.

Image: @building_ribbons

Create an indoor plant oasis

Nothing screams outdoors more than styling with flowers and foliage. As always, stick with the odd number rule by grouping houseplants in threes or fives for greater impact, and mix up pots for an artisan touch. Neale Smith of lighting design consultancy, Foundry, shares some lightening tips.

"It's all about the guest experience," says Neale at Foundry, which designs lighting for luxury hotel rooms. "But whether you're designing for a luxury hotel bedroom or a bedroom at home, they both need lighting that's practical and in keeping with the interior aesthetic. Any easy way to approach bedroom lighting is to break it down into three layers, starting with the functional layer. This lighting helps you carry out daily activities, such as the wardrobe lights that illuminate your clothes. Next up is feature lighting which we use to create interest, followed by 'final dressing'. This helps tie the scheme together, giving it a unique look and feel."

Layer 1

Functional lighting

Think about how you use the space. What time of day will it be used for most? Does it need to double as somewhere to work? Functional lighting (often referred to as ambient lighting) is the foundation of any lighting scheme, enabling you to navigate a room safely and carry out day-today activities, such as getting dressed in the morning with ease. Typical functional lighting fixtures can be achieved with a raft of basic fixtures including chandeliers, dimmable downlights, or ceiling-mounted lights. Main sources of light generally need a higher build wattage than lighting used for adding personality and warmth.

Layer 2

Feature lighting

Feature lighting, or accent lighting as it is also know, highlights the areas you wish to draw attention to within the space. This might be an interior or architectural feature such as a fireplace, a reading 'nook' chair or even a piece of artwork. Feature lighting helps you create little windows of interest that, along with all other interior elements, help to tell a room's story - its personality, whether it's intended to reflect the homeowners, a specific style or the home's architecture. Your choice of featuring lighting will be dictated by the mood and aesthetic you wish to create, but common feature lights include wall grazers and uplighters.

Fitzwilliam Hotel: Wall grazers draw attention to the view. © Foundry London

Layer 3

Final dressing

Layer 3 is the cherry on the lighting cake. The final dressing of the space could include a statement pendant or chandelier - this could double as a piece of artwork in itself; wall lights that perhaps pick up on the room's geometry' or table lights in a colour, fabric or pattern used elsewhere in the room. We all know that investing in quality supports the ‘buy well, buy less’ mantra and that is less is more, but do you know how to shop ethically and sustainably for your bed? We asked Tielle's very own ethical warrior, Catherine Morris, for advice on getting it right.

Questions to ask when buying bedding

What is the product made from?

When shopping for eco-friendly bedding there are alternatives to virgin down fills. Duvets and pillows made from recycled down, recycled plastic bottles and sustainable botanic fibres such as bamboo are growing in popularity. But are these products as green as they make out? Here's the lowdown on what you need to know.

Recycled Down

Far from an eco buzzword, recycled down has been used as a bulking agent for bedding and clothing since before WW1. The growing recent demand for down in high-end clothing coupled with environment concerns has however created a fresh need to reuse this existing resource, diverting it from landfill.

As a by-product of this luxury market, the recycled down we use in our pillows and duvets comprises large down clusters. This makes the bedding luxuriously warm and light. The simpler processing needs of recycling down as opposed to virgin fills also involves less chemicals and energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. That said, recycled down is still sanitised to strict European standards before its second life.

While recycled bedding involves fewer production steps, recycled European down still holds its value. Quality down is a luxury product however, the fill weight and fill power of your down cluster will impact the price. The higher the fill power, the more luxurious the down cluster. Pure down duvets tend to be lighter than lower fill power, feather-rich items because of the large down cluster.

FeelGood® recycled down pillow

The Tielle FeelGood® range is made from NEOKDUN® Eco-friendly 100% recycled down - the most sustainable filling material you can buy.

Recycled Bottles

Plastic bottles can be recycled into many things but recent innovations mean they can be made into high quality bedding fills. My preference is to celebrate their unique functions rather than to hide them behind a room partition or divider which can feel a little unwelcoming and disrupts a room’s flow. The trick for achieving the perfect bedroom-office space rests in achieving harmony, which comes from using balance, scale, proportion and repetition through colour, pattern or materials in exactly the right amounts.

Top tips on tricking out your hybrid room

Furniture: Nailing furniture size is important for any layout. Furniture that’s too small in scale will make a room feel sparse and uncomfortable. Too-big pieces will make a room feel small and may even disrupt its circulation. You don’t want to side-step furniture or bump into corners as you climb into bed. Aesthetically, an elegant desk with refined legs and ideally a hidden storage compartment for stationery will flow better in a room that has to function as both an office and inviting bedroom. With the addition of a vanity mirror and light, an attractive desk table can also double as a dressing table when guests stay.

Chair: While the #1 must-have for any office chair is comfort, it also needs to look the part in a hybrid space. A stylish upholstered office chair is preferable to a big and bulky ergonomic chair more in keeping with the boardroom, and can also double as an occasional chair when guests stay. A throw blanket over the back of a chair can also help to create a welcoming look. Be mindful that chairs with high backs can disrupt the visual flow of the room, as will a chair with arm rests unless they tuck under the table. Chairs with height adjustment and modest but sufficient seat depth and width will look best in a mixed-use space.

Lighting: A room needs a mix of light sources – overhead, task and accent lighting. This will enable you to adjust the lighting to suit your mood, function, e.g. sleeping or working, or the light needs of the time of day. A modern desk lamp can be a striking piece of home-office décor, not simply a functional tool for better ergonomics, and if attractive, can serve as a reading light when guests stay. Modern lights with different brightness levels and colour-temperature modes can help you better meet the needs of a multi-use space.

Storage: Having a clutter-free sleep environment is vital to helping you switch off and get a good night’s sleep. Choosing the right plants for your room’s light and temperature is important as nothing looks sadder than a sickly plant. Plants such as dracaena, calathea or rubber plants are low maintenance and can survive pretty much any environment. They give visitors a place to escape to and relax in any time of the day. While you don’t have to buy the most expensive of everything, the desire for comfort is universal. Adding a cosy reading chair and investing in high quality bedding - mattress topper, pillows and bed linen – are the foundations of a great guest experience.

Style for comfort

I used to work at Claridge’s, the epitome of luxury and style. The rooms are elegant, the beds and mattresses strike the perfect soft-hard balance and the linen is spot on. While it would be impossible to deliver the same five-star luxury at home, there are plenty of lessons you can take from hotels. Aside from investing in high quality bedding, styling with good lighting, including dimmable bedside lamps, and a beautiful upholstered headboard and rug go a long way to creating an inviting room. Offering a range of pillows is also nice, as some guests will prefer a firm pillow, some soft.

Play with style

While comfort and functionality are key to styling guest rooms, they can also be a safe place to experiment with less conventional interior design styles. Guests don’t want to stay in a room that mimics their own and interesting in-room decor can enhance the guest experience. Creating a little world that’s different from the rest of the house can also give guests a welcome sense of separation; their own home from home. I particularly like the way interior designer Kit Kemp uses colours, textures and patterns to create eclectic yet relaxing spaces.

Image: Knightsbridge Hotel, Firmdale Hotels

Clear the clutter

Clutter and sleep make terrible bed fellows. If your guest room has morphed into a work space during the pandemic, store away the clutter while they stay. Custom joinery is often the best way to make the most of awkward or small spaces and to accommodate big bulky guest bedding. Remember to clear the drawers and wardrobes so guests don’t have to live out of suitcases.

Add little luxuries

Go the extra mile with a hotel or spa-style robe, slippers and basket of toiletries – perhaps even a pillow mist by the bed. A radio or bluetooth speaker and a few magazines along with a refreshment tray with kettle, cups, water and nibbles also help guests feel at home. Providing tea and coffee making facilities also avoids guests feeling like intruders as they fumble around the kitchen trying to make their morning brew.

Don’t try too hard

Finally, it’s the season for being jolly not jolly stressed.
