Why Your Natural Fill Pillow Has a Slight Odour (And What to Do About It)

Are you noticing a slight odour from your new feather and down pillow? Don't worry! This is completely normal for natural fill pillows.

Why Does This Happen?

Natural fill pillows may have a slight odour when you first unbox them, especially during warmer months. This is because the pillows get warm during transit. However, this odour is temporary and completely natural. Rest assured, our products are made with Class 1 fillings (EN 12131), indicating the highest level of quality.

Our pillows and duvets are also subject to stringent procedures when it comes to making sure the feather and down is cleaned to a level that exceeds the European standards. They are certified by Downafresh which means the feather and down has been washed with water and dried at temperatures of at least 100°C. Hence, products which carry the Downafresh label meet the hygienic requirements laid down in the European standard EN 12935.

What Can You Do?

Here's our expert advice to help the odour subside:

Air Your Pillows: As soon as you unpack your new pillows, we recommend airing them for 48 hours. This will allow the odour to dissipate naturally.

  • Place the pillows in a well-ventilated area, ideally a spare room or outside if dry.
  • Air circulation is key. Let the fresh air work its magic through the feather and down.

Extra Tips for Maintaining Freshness

Use Pillow Protectors: These will keep your pillows fresh and clean, adding an extra layer of protection against odour. We recommend our Cotton Zipped Pillow Protectors.

What to Avoid

Washing Your New Pillows: We do not recommend washing your new natural fill pillows, this is because it is essential for the central core of the pillow to dry completely and evenly and if the pillow does not dry completely, this may lead to the development of unpleasant odours.
