How to Create a DIY Spa Night at Home

When life’s busy (and let’s face it, when isn’t it?), practising self-care can feel like an indulgence. But it’s just as crucial as being mindful of what you eat and drink. Along with exposure to sunlight, regularly exercise and sleeping well, a little pampering is important for our physical health and mental wellbeing. So grab your bath or spa robe and put yourself top of the list.

Create a calming vibe
Self-care doesn’t have to involve pricey eye masks or fancy candles. It’s anything that makes you feel good in mind, body and soul. This might mean playing music, dimming lights, and indulging in a blissful soak before wrapping yourself up like a burrito in a towel or luxury towelling bathrobe. Whatever it is, your bath or bedtime ritual is unique to you.

Enjoy a relaxing soak
The bathroom serves as an escape from the world. While it may lack an infinity pool or an attendant to cater to every whim, a few tweaks can turn any bathroom into a spa-like retreat. Although baths are more symbolic of ‘me time’ than showers, invigorating showers help to clear the mind. If you don’t like the way your toes and fingers shrivel up like an old prune while bathing, apply hand cream soon after. Wrap up in a hotel dressing gown for maximum mood boosting results.

Take in nice scents
Aside from making skin feel smooth and soft, fragranced bath and body products such as oils, salts and moisturisers have the power to influence our mood. Typically, fresh, invigorating scents such as peppermint act as a mental pick-me-up while lavender helps us unwind. Spritzing lavender on a bath or spa waffle robe or pillowcase (try the amazing This Works deep pillow spray) is a simple way to ease away stress. You could even spray a little on a luxury bath mat for calming, feel-good vibes.

Indulge in a home facial
A DIY home facial is the ultimate affordable pick-me-up and can be done in 5 simple steps.  Cleanse, steam, exfoliate, mask and moisturise and massage while cuddled up in a spa robe for a spa day feeling at home.

Step 1: Cleanse
Begin with an oil-based cleanser to lift makeup and sebum and wipe this away with a warm face cloth. Follow up with your regular cream or gel face wash — cream-based for sensitive skin and gel-based for oily and acne-prone skin. Use the right products for your skin type.

Step 2: Steam
Steaming opens pores, helping to prevent breakouts by deep-cleaning and removing trapped dirt. To home steam, you don't need fancy equipment. A simple bowl, boiling water, and towel over your head will do. Add essential oils like tea tree for its calming, antibacterial properties.

Step 3: Exfoliate
With your pores opened, it's time to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells using either a classic face scrub, chemical exfoliant, or a powder-based exfoliant. Your skin is delicate so use gentle pressure to avoid any damage.

Step 4: Mask
Now onto the fun part – the mask! Clay masks work well for controlling oils and drawing out impurities, while sheet masks provide hydration and a lasting glow. For a budget-friendly mask, a simple oats and hot water mask is excellent for calming skin and reducing inflammation.

Step 5: Moisturise & Massage
On removing your mask, ensure your skin stays hydrated. Massage in your favourite serums and creams using upward motions to avoid dragging the skin. Then kick back and relax with glowing skin.

Enjoy a pampering pedicure
Soft feet and freshly polished nails can go a long way to boosting our mood. Even if you prefer the trend for ‘naked nails’ or ‘no-nicure’ tidy cuticles and trimmed nails are a surefire confidence booster and can help us feel things are under control. For a simple DIY pedicure check out the Paloma Daily tutorial for salon-worthy results. Giving your feet a regular rubdown also offers physical health benefits by improving circulation, reducing tension and easing pain. Finally, relax and throw on one of Tielle’s luxury robes or luxury personalised bath robes for that VIP spa day feel.
