Bedding that doesn’t cost the earth

Sustainability is, and will continue to be, at the forefront of the choices we make as a business, and one reason why over 5,000 luxury 5* hotels and boutiques come to us for all their bedding and bed linen needs.

HERE’S HOW BUYING LESS, CHOOSING RESPONSIBLY AND MAKING IT LAST CAN BENEFIT YOU TOO.

BUY LESS

Thankfully the mindless consumerism of recent decades is being replaced with a more conscious approach to buying goods. Downsizing our lifestyles for environmental reasons can also have a positive impact on our home enjoyment. After all, who wants to sleep in a bedroom crammed full of stuff?

Decluttering expert Arianna Steigman of Reclaim your Space suggests “keeping just three sets of bed linen: one for the bed, one in the wash and one in reserve. Invest in or keep only your most beautiful linen and donate or responsibly dump everything else.”

CHOOSE RESPONSIBLY

There’s no escaping the impact fast fashion, food or anything else made quickly and cheaply is having on the world we live in. But when it comes to choosing bed linen or pillows, dreamy packaging and product descriptions all too often twist the truth to get us buying more.

“So many sins can go on within the textile trade”, says fine linen expert Robert Lancaster-Gaye. “When testing a well-known retailer’s pillow we found down and feather fibres, broken feather quills and dust, despite the pillow advertising as 90% white duck down. In another pillow, the so-called luxury item contained 80% pure feather with large quills, plastic and red threads along with a lot of dust and other muck.”

An inferior pillow or duvet fill not only affects the sleep experience, but its lifespan will be short. In contrast, a high quality, responsibly-made pillow can last around 3 years, or 1,000 sleeps. Bed linen made from 100% long-staple cotton spun from a single-ply also provides longer-lasting luxury than inferior bedding, helping you reduce landfill and get more quality sleep for your money.

LABELS

Product labels can help you determine a company’s commitment to environmental and socially responsible production. In the linen world these can include:

EU Ecolabel: This mark of excellence is awarded to products and services that meet high environmental standards throughout their lifecycle. Our Suprelle Tencel ECO Fresh Pillow has an eco-label for helping to save 80 million plastic bottles annually from going to landfill.

OEKO-TEX certification: All Tielle bed linen is OEKO-TEX certified, ensuring it’s free from harmful substances and safe for you and your family.

BCI Cotton: The Better Cotton Initiative is a non-profit organisation that supports cotton farmers in water efficiency, caring for natural habitats, reducing the use of harmful chemicals and respecting workers’ rights. By buying linen from Tielle, you are supporting more sustainable farming practices.

MAKE IT LAST

All things wear over time, but good housekeeping helps keep your bed linen, pillows, protectors and duvets out of landfill and looking great on the bed. That said, it’s best to replace saggy old pillows that can disrupt sleep and lead to health problems such as the proverbial ‘crook in the neck’. The bobbling or pilling often found in poor quality bedsheets can also prevent you from getting the best night’s sleep.

PROLONGING YOUR PILLOW’S LIFE

All pillows need a little TLC. Adding a pillow protector helps prolong your pillow’s lifespan and add an extra layer of comfort. A soft cotton zipped pillow protector will more effectively protect from odour, stains and dust mites than an unzipped envelope style pillow protector. Cotton is also breathable and noise-free, unlike many synthetic pillow protectors which give off a crinkle-crackle at night.

MAKE YOUR BED LINEN LAST

Hotel quality bed linen looks and feels great wash after wash. However, there are still ways to help keep it looking good. Although all our bed linen is strong and soft enough to withstand washing at 95º, washing at a lower wash and rinse temperature uses less energy and minimises water usage. Washing at a lower temperature is also kinder to the fabric.
