How to choose the perfect pillow

Our co-founder here at Tielle Love Luxury, Robert Lancaster-Gaye, has been sharing his top tips for picking your perfect pillow with Red Online

"How did you sleep last night? A sound, uninterrupted eight hours? No? Us neither. There are myriad reasons why you might not be sleeping properly but one of them could be very simple, as simple in fact as your pillow."

"Robert Lancaster Gaye, Founding Director of Tielle Love Luxury is passionate about all things bedding and the impact it can have on the quality of our sleep.

The bedding pro talked us through picking the right pillow for our beauty sleep...

1 – The first thing to remember when choosing your pillows is that it’s entirely personal preference, no two people sleep the same or want the same from a pillow. It’s also worth remembering that we spend a third of our lives with our face buried in our pillows so invest in the best quality you can afford.

2 – The quality of pillows isn’t only defined by the % of down in them, it’s the quality of the filling and not all down and feather is created equal in terms of cleanliness and plumpness. Ask yourself, does it sound too good to be true?

3 – Investing in high quality ingredients means that your pillow will plump up and retain its shape and support for far longer. A quick way to test your pillows is to place it over your arm and if it sags in the middle it could be time for a change.

4 - The firmness or softness of a pillow it’s only determined by the % of down but the quality and quantity. We always recommend that you buy one, sleep on it and then buy the rest for the bed once you’re happy. It’s worth remembering that a new pillow will always be plumper than a 5 year old one.

5 – Even if you think you can’t have natural fill pillows for allergen reasons, high quality feathers and down, which are super clean and encased in a high density case with double stitched seams means nothing can escape. It’s also been clinically proven than synthetic pillows hold more bedbugs than natural fill ones and that there are significantly more people who have reactions to bedbugs compare to those who react to feathers.

6 – Lightweight pure down is generally too soft for most people and a blend of feathers and down gives better structure and support whilst being soft on the face.

Our most popular is The Savoy which is a blend of feather and down, with a higher down content for the perfect balance of structure (feather) and softness on the face (down). They are generously filled and plump up to create a sumptuous bed look. These pillows are perfect for side sleepers.

For those who like a softer pillow and those who sleep on their back or front, our luxury European Goose Down pillows are the perfect choice. Hand-filled in the UK with luxuriously soft goose down which is ethically sourced, these pillows are filled with fluffy clusters of down for breathability and encased in a cotton down-proof cover preventing interrupted sleep.
