Instagram vs Reality - Tielle's Interior Top Tips

Instagram is a great source of home decor inspiration but what works for one person, may not work for you. Your room or home needs to reflect your style and needs, rather than someone else's. Making the most of its natural attributes, such as any period features, can also give it a more characterful and unique look and feel.

Starting any interiors project can feel overwhelming, especially if multiple rooms need work. Taking time to plan your scheme will help you create rooms that flow together and focus on the steps needed to achieve your dream space.

How to plan a room makeover

  • Identify basic info about your room, e.g. size and use
  • Think about what you like and dislike about the room.
  • Write down your needs and wants for your room and gather inspiration using Instagram, Houzz, Pinterest and magazines.
  • Create a mood board, perhaps using a mood board app, to establish the ‘feel’, mood or room-style you wish to cultivate. Pulling together mood board elements such as furniture pieces, artwork, rugs, flooring, paint swatches and accessories will help you see what works.
  • Make a floor plan using the measurements you took in step 1.
  • Make a shopping list and order (shipping times will vary, so plan ahead). If you’re renovating a bathroom or ensuite, don’t forget the importance of basics such as luxury white towels or luxury bath mats. Likewise, luxury bedding sets go a long way to giving you that hotel bedding look and feel.
